This exceptional six-year-old, born ‘without eyes’ and incapable of eating, aspires to reshape societal attitudes towards those with profound facial disfigurements.

Hailing from Woodbury, Tennessee, Christian Buchanan was diagnosed with Tessier cleft lip and palate, an extremely rare condition where facial tissues fail to properly fuse during development.

 

Consequently, Christian was born completely blind with substantial gaps in his face, presenting challenges in eating and speaking. Despite being documented only 60 times in medical history, this condition has not deterred Christian from leading a full life, involving activities such as wrestling with his younger brother, playing with Lego, and learning karate.

Lacey, Christian’s mother, elucidated that his condition, classified as three, four, and five, encompasses microphthalmia and originated from amniotic banding syndrome. Fibrous bands in the womb, attaching to the baby’s face, cut off blood flow, resulting in Christian’s unique condition.

Since birth, Christian has grappled with vision impairment and confronted obstacles in learning and speech development. Nonetheless, he attends Special Kids Therapy & Nursing Centre weekly for diverse activities, ranging from Lego classes to US geography and creative writing.

 

Despite undergoing several surgeries to reconstruct his face and close the cleft gaps, Christian anticipates more operations in the future. Lacey and Christian actively advocate to raise awareness about facial disabilities.

Navigating the world without sight presents daily challenges for Christian, but his unwavering positive attitude and determination remain evident. Lacey underscored that, despite societal stigmas, Christian embraces his distinctiveness, responding confidently to inquiries about his appearance with scripts like, “That’s just how God made me, and I was born awesome.”

In addition to excelling as a violinist, Christian is diligently working towards an orange belt in karate, showcasing his independence and burgeoning confidence.
